Everything at The Sanchaya is angled towards a long white beach with serried rows of palms, past a 50m-long aquamarine-tiled pool, and with many seating options, from umbrella-shaded loungers to canopied daybeds. It’s a mesmerising view of the Singapore Strait and, as I dawdle, an attendant brings a basket containing water distilled on site, sunscreen and chilled refresher towels.
“The word luxury is often overused by hotels and resorts. But for the discerning traveller, a luxury hotel has to come with high levels of hospitality - in terms of accommodation, service, dining and everything else that makes the experience hard to forget. At The Sanchaya, the priciest property on Bintan, Indonesia, you will feel more than valued. Every guest is pampered and treated like a VIP.”
“It is little surprise that Natalya Pavchinskaya, owner of The Sanchaya, –arguably Bintan’s sleekest stay, with an eye-catching black-and-white aesthetic and beautiful rooms themed around various countries in Southeast Asia–has now launched her own line of clothing and beauty products.”
“The Sanchaya is a heady mixture of a glorious past, the cutting edge of modern luxury and a clear vision of opulence, brought together in a magnificent way. And Bintan is all the more richer for it.”
“The Sanchaya Bintan in Indonesia lets guests soak in Lefroy Brooks clawfoot tubs atop bespoke encaustic tiles crafted for the hotel. The pigments in each tile are created using hot wax.”
"Book a session with their master sommelier and find out why your sauvignon blanc is best eaten with goats cheese, why a manchego is rounded out by a tempranillo and a riesling cuts through a creamy camembert.
The long table setting is surrounded by glass door wine fridges and Riedel glassware. When you start the session with a glass of Ruinart champagne you know you’re in for a great afternoon."

Opened in 2014 by Russian business owner Natalya Pavchinskaya, the Sanchaya is impressive off the bat. Pavchinskaya’s collaboration with Thai design firm P49 Deesign has clearly paid off in the language of open skies, a stunning low-rise enclave, manicured gardening and elegant Southeast Asian architecture on the edge of the South China Sea. It’s immediately disarming.
During the day, in between meals and spa appointments, I explore the clear waters of Lagoi Bay on a paddle board with a local instructor, who calms my nerves for the beauty living within- fishes, corals, and all. The roads beyond The Sanchaya are as tranquil, as I hop on a single- speed bike and take the 7.2km route around a peaceful lake come sunset ... the real world seemingly far away.
A range of Christmas festivities are also scheduled throughout the property, which boasts colonial-inspired design features and a stately home atmosphere, complete with sweeping views of the crystal clear ocean.

The Sanchaya, rising from the white sands of Bintan island in Indonesia’s Riau archipelago, is a genteel adventure into an old-world setting fitted out with contemporary luxuries.”
“There’s a particularly lucky spot upon The Sanchaya’s private beachfront reminiscent of the powder white sands at The Maldives, popular for wedding proposals. The secluded dining set-up is fringed with myriad flickering candles shaped in a giant heart and the silhouettes of swaying palm trees.”
